Darin Rice
Principal: Darin Rice

I began my career in education through the Alternative Certification Program in 1999 at Brewer Middle School in Greenwood School District 50. I left the environmental science industry to teach 8th grade Science and Pre-Algebra. During my early years in Greenwood 50, I taught Science, Pre-Algebra, South Carolina History, STEM Related Arts and I started the Project Lead the Way Engineering Program at the Russell Technology Center.

After completing my Master’s in Educational Administration in 2008, I became the Assistant Principal at Northside Middle School. The following year I was asked to move to Greenwood High School where I was the 11th and 12th-grade Assistant Principal for 4 years. In 2013, I became the Assistant Principal for Instruction at Westview Middle School. Then, in 2017, I was hired to be the Principal at Ninety Six High School. During my time here we have seen many changes and had many challenges such as COVID-19. In 2021, I completed my Educational Specialist degree at Furman University.

I have been married for 28 years to my wife, Karla (NSHS Class of 1988) and we have four children (Kaylen, John Paul, Kathryn, and Klaire) along with our Son-in-law James and Granddaughter Evelyn (Evie). As a family, we enjoy the outdoors, and family trips to Fripp Island and Wyoming/Montana in the summer. I am an avid hunter and I love to cook.

I have been an educator for 25+ years here at Ninety-Six High School. I received my B.S. in Biology from Furman University and an Educational Specialist Degree in Administration and Supervision from Clemson University.  I began my career teaching biology and chemistry and have taught Biology I, Biology II, Chemistry I CP, Chemistry I Honors, Chemistry II CP, Chemistry II Honors, and Physics Honors. I have been an Assistant Principal since 2019 and have also worked with our FLEX Program.   I am also the National Honor Society Adviser, Beta Club Adviser, and Student Government Association (SGA) Co-Adviser.

In 2017, I began working at Ninety Six High School as an English teacher and am currently an assistant principal and am responsible for testing, curriculum and instruction, and the teacher mentoring program. I am also the Director of Flex Academy, Greenwood 52’s alternative education program for middle and high school students. Prior to coming to NSHS, I taught high school English for five years at an inner-city school in Augusta, Georgia, and for four years at McCormick High School in McCormick, South Carolina. I was also an English instructor for three years at Piedmont Technical College and Aiken Technical College.

I hold an Ed.S in Educational Leadership from Arkansas State University, a Master’s degree in Teaching Secondary Education from Augusta State University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Communications from Augusta State University. On a personal note, I am “Nana” to thirteen wonderful grandchildren who live in three different states and I spend much of my spare time having fun with them.
